The Glenroy Community Hub is a purpose-built integrated health and lifelong learning centre designed to support, educate, and inspire locals at all stages of their life. Achieving the requirements of Passivhaus and 3 Petals of the Living Building Challenge, the project is a demonstration of the City of Merri-bek’s commitment to world-leading, sustainable design.

The Hub is the first public building in Australia to be Passivhaus certified. Certification was achieved within six months of completion which was a fantastic achievement. The Hub has a high standard of environmental performance including low-energy use and high-comfort to support the health and well-being of users.

A global benchmark for best practices in sustainable building design, the state-of-the-art community facility meets the highest environmental design standards and demonstrates the council’s commitment to leadership in acting on climate change.

With a net positive energy rating, the Glenroy Community Hub exceeds the organisation’s commitment to delivering net zero buildings.

As head contractor, Building Engineering established a plan for the project focusing on the social aspects of sustainability and equity, minimising the impact on the environment, supporting local business and promoting economic diversity and viability. This plan builds on Building Engineering’s Social and Sustainable Procurement Policy and framework and Equity and Diversity Policy through partnerships with local registered charities ‘Youth Projects’ and ‘I’m Still Learning’.

Features of the new hub include:

  • Library
  • Kindergarten
  • Long day care
  • Maternal and child health service
  • Community health centre
  • Customer service centre
  • Neighbourhood centre
  • A locally managed community garden
  • Multi-purpose rooms available for hire

The co-location of these community services provides greater service offerings and social opportunities to the Glenroy community.
