Beyond the build: students step onto site for real-world learning experience

As part of our continued partnership with St Columba’s College, Building Engineering recently welcomed students to our live construction site at Santa Maria College for a one-of-a-kind industry immersion. This collaboration forms part of the College’s Project-Based Learning Week, providing students with a rare opportunity to experience the construction world firsthand.

Following the recent completion of the Foxford Innovation Centre at St Columba’s, this initiative marks a new chapter in our relationship—one that moves beyond delivering buildings to delivering inspiration and hands-on learning.

Rachel Richter, Head of Marketing, kicked off the day with a warm welcome, introducing students to an immersive behind-the-scenes experience on a live construction site—far beyond a typical classroom session.

Joining Rachel was Project Manager Amani Eljari, who is leading the delivery of the Santa Maria College Stage 2 Learning Village. This brand new, state-of-the-art facility will be home to Year 9 and 10 students.

“Construction works are well underway, and we have now finished the structure, and we are working on the feature fluted precast panels. The roof is on, and we are progressing with the external cladding and canopy works, as well as internal wall framing, installation of window frames, and services rough-in.”

But the visit wasn’t just about observation—it was a launchpad for a real industry challenge. Each student group was tasked with designing their own classroom space within the new Learning Village.

The brief?

– Choose key elements like flooring, lighting, furniture, windows, and doors
– Manage a set budget
– Present a physical model and cost plan
– Justify design decisions with creativity, collaboration and logic

“We’re handing the reins over to you,” Rachel explained. “Think like a construction team—plan, budget, design, and present your vision.”

By bridging classroom learning with a live site experience, the initiative has inspired students to explore future career pathways and develop valuable real-world skills in planning, budgeting and creative thinking.

We’ll be returning to St Columba’s next week to see the student presentations and designs unfold—and we can’t wait to see the creativity, teamwork and problem-solving on display.

At Building Engineering, we’re proud to support initiatives that inspire young minds, promote industry engagement, and offer meaningful learning experiences that go beyond the build.
