Building a landmark: the story behind the Ivanhoe Grammar School Fraser Centre façade

The Fraser Centre at Ivanhoe Grammar School is a perfect example of this philosophy, with its striking façade now emerging as one of the project’s defining architectural features.
Designed by Wood Marsh Architecture, the Fraser Centre has been envisioned to provide Ivanhoe Grammar School with a bold new identity for the future. The building balances contemporary design with timeless materials, creating an architectural statement that reflects the school’s values while establishing a memorable presence on campus.
The façade is inspired by the idea of ancient scrolls, with sweeping forms and textured brickwork evoking the appearance of aged paper upon which learning is written. This sculptural design introduces a sense of movement and curiosity, contrasting beautifully with the building’s more structured form behind it.
A Vision Realised Through Collaboration
Bringing this ambitious vision to life has required close collaboration between Ivanhoe Grammar School, Wood Marsh Architecture, Building Engineering, and specialist manufacturer Krause Bricks.
As Wood Marsh Architecture explains, every great building is the result of collaboration. From the earliest stages of design, Building Engineering worked proactively with the project team to refine construction methodologies, optimise value, and ensure the architectural vision could be realised without compromise.
This early contractor involvement enabled design decisions to be carefully tested before documentation was finalised, creating efficiencies while maintaining the integrity of the original concept.
70,000 Custom Australian-Made Bricks
One of the most remarkable aspects of the Fraser Centre is its bespoke brick façade. More than 70,000 Australian-made bricks, comprising 16 individually designed custom brick profiles, have been manufactured specifically for this project by Krause Bricks.
Each custom brick began with detailed engineering and the creation of purpose-built moulds before being carefully formed and fired at Krause Bricks’ Victorian manufacturing facility. The handcrafted nature of the bricks creates subtle variation, texture and shadow, giving the façade exceptional depth and richness while celebrating Australian craftsmanship.
The decision to use locally manufactured bricks reflects a shared commitment to quality, innovation and supporting Australian industry.
Prototyping to Perfect the Design
Delivering a façade of this complexity required extensive prototyping before construction commenced.
Working closely with Wood Marsh Architecture, Building Engineering proposed the construction of full-scale façade prototypes, allowing the team to assess mortar colour, mortar finish, brick geometry, curved brick interfaces and the overall visual impact at true scale.
This collaborative process ensured the custom brick profiles aligned precisely with the architect’s design intent while allowing practical construction challenges to be resolved early. The result is a façade that remains true to the original vision while delivering certainty throughout construction.
