Major construction begins at Harkness Memorial Park
Building Engineering is proud to announce that major construction has officially commenced at Harkness Memorial Park, following our appointment to deliver the first stage of this landmark development for the Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (GMCT).
The project will shape a significant community precinct for generations to come.
GMCT CEO, Andrew Eriksen, says the transition from planning to construction marks an exciting milestone.
“So far, much of Harkness Memorial Park has been imagined, whether through conversations, consultations, renders, or plans. Now we can start seeing the park’s roads, buildings, and future memorial spaces taking their physical shape,” says Eriksen.
“It’s incredibly exciting to know that in a little over a year, we will be walking through the first stage of the memorial park together with the local community and Traditional Owners we worked with so closely to design it.”
This appointment continues our strong and successful partnership with GMCT, following the recent delivery of the multi-award-winning Northern Memorial Park Depot.
Building Engineering’s Construction Manager, Andrew Eljari, says the team is eager to bring this important community project to life.
“We’re thrilled to continue our strong partnership with GMCT following the recent delivery of the multi-award-winning Northern Memorial Park Depot. Harkness Memorial Park is a landmark project for Victoria, and we’re proud to bring our capability and experience to its first stage,” Eljari says.
Early works, completed in November 2025, have already begun to regenerate the site, with new plantings introduced to support long-term biodiversity and shape the emerging landscape.
Stage One of Harkness Memorial Park is expected to open in early 2027, marking the beginning of a significant new asset for Melbourne’s West.
